April 2, 2025

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) actively participated in GovX.0 Philippines, held at Conrad Manila from March 18 to 19, 2025, bringing to the forefront its commitment to digital transformation in trade facilitation and border management. The high-level event gathered top officials from various government agencies, industry leaders, and technology experts to discuss the evolving role of digitalization in governance and economic development.

Representing the Bureau of Customs, Deputy Commissioner Ronnel B. Hombre of the Management Information Systems and Technology Group (MISTG) delivered a presentation on the BOC’s modernization initiatives. His discussion, titled Revolutionizing Trade & Industry with the Power of Digital Transformation, underscored the BOC’s strides in harnessing advanced technologies to streamline customs processes, enhance trade efficiency, and strengthen national security.

During his address, Deputy Commissioner Hombre emphasized the BOC’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing to modernize operations. These innovations are reshaping customs administration by optimizing workflows, enhancing risk management, and reducing bottlenecks in trade clearance.

“Our mission is clear—integrating cutting-edge technology to ensure a seamless and efficient customs process that benefits traders, businesses, and the public. The goal is not just automation but intelligent transformation that strengthens national competitiveness and aligns with global trade standards,” he stated.

Recognizing the challenges associated with legacy system integration, the BOC remains proactive in implementing strategic solutions to ensure a smooth digital transition. Efforts such as the ASEAN Single Window System, Enhanced e-Travel System, and modernized payment platforms are pivotal in advancing trade facilitation while upholding stringent security measures.

“The Bureau of Customs is not merely adopting digital solutions—it is setting the standard for smart, data-driven customs operations that enhance efficiency, transparency, and security,” the Acting Deputy Commissioner affirmed. “As we advance our digital transformation, we remain committed to facilitating legitimate trade, securing our borders, and driving economic progress.”

Under the guidance of Secretary Ralph G. Recto and Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio, the BOC continues to drive transformative reforms that strengthen the country’s position in the global trade network. The agency’s modernization initiatives align with the national government’s push for digital governance and economic competitiveness. With its active participation in GovX.0 Philippines, the BOC reaffirms its dedication to technological innovation as a key pillar of customs modernization, ensuring that the Philippines remains at the forefront of global trade facilitation.
