BOC Foils PhP38.8-M Marijuana Smuggling Attempt at MICP

August 22, 2024

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted a shipment from Thailand containing P38.8 million worth of dried marijuana at the Manila International Container Port (MICP).

The operation was initiated based on derogatory information received about the shipment. Following this report, the Customs MICP requested a 100% physical examination. Initial x-ray scans on July 31, 2024 and August 1, 2024 revealed suspected dried marijuana inside three (3) boxes. This was confirmed on August 2, 2024 during the 100% physical examination thereof, uncovering 99 heat-sealed packages of marijuana approximately valued at PhP38,808,000.

The shipment was declared to contain plastic tableware, kitchenware, blankets, and shoes.

Witnesses from CIIS, Enforcement and Security Service, Customs Anti-Illegal Drug Task Force, Environmental Protection and Compliance Division, and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) observed the inspection. The shipment was then secured and will undergo further testing by PDEA.

MICP District Collector Carmelita M. Talusan and MICP team continues to strengthen their vigilance on illegal goods and strengthen its partnership with other partner agencies in full support of the commitment of BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio to adhere with President Marcos’ directive to combat illegal drugs. Commissioner Rubio stressed that: “the BOC remains committed in preventing drugs from entering our country and will continue to intensify our efforts to protect our borders and citizens.”
