BOC and DENR Seize Exotic Wildlife in Pasay

August 2, 2023

The Bureau of Customs – Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA), in collaboration with the Bureau’s Enforcement and Security Service – Environmental Protection & Compliance Division (ESS-EPCD) and operatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), has intercepted a shipment of exotic wildlife at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay.

The confiscated wildlife, consisting of five (5) heads of Pacman frogs originating from Malaysia with an estimated market value amounting to P81,795.00, was found misdeclared as “accessories” and consigned to an addressee in San Pedro Laguna.

The unlawful trading of exotic wildlife is a serious offense and a direct violation of both Republic Act (RA) No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act and RA No. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. In accordance with these laws, the confiscated Pacman frogs were promptly handed over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for proper safekeeping and further necessary action.

The recent success in intercepting the illegal wildlife shipment adds to BOC-NAIA’s track record in combatting wildlife trafficking, as the port has been commended by TRAFFIC Southeast Asia for its steadfast efforts against the illicit wildlife trade.

Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio praised the collaborative efforts of BOC-NAIA, ESS-EPCD, and DENR, stating, “We are fully committed to eradicating illegal wildlife trading in our country. Our agencies will continue to work hand in hand to protect our precious wildlife and uphold the rule of law.”

The BOC-NAIA, under the leadership of District Collector Atty. Yasmin Mapa, will remain vigilant against suspicious activities related to wildlife trafficking or other customs violations.#
